Bristol Pocket Sized People

Pocket Sized People is a public installation featuring mini projections of tiny 10cm tall characters inventively making use of everyday human waste. In a world where children’s sandpits become holiday resorts, a single French fry is a family meal and a small swarm of flies becomes a deadly stampede, these mischievous mini men survive, strive and thrive.

We want to develop this project for Bristol Light Festival by adding scenes that reflect Bristol. The project currently only consists of 3 scenes but it is very popular which is why we would like to create another 10 mischievous scenes in order to produce a mini people trail that will make visitors linger and smile.

We have previously created a similar large scale immersive experience based on this idea by building a huge cardboard set (Micropolis - see video).

We would like to use the same approach but instead of a big cardboard set let the little projected characters populate the nooks and niches of Bristolian streets.

The scenes could include but are not exclusive to:

Dollhouse Divas: A projected pair of little girlsfriends are having a laugh stripping a few discarded barbie dolls off their glamorous pink clothes in order to try them on...

Balloonacy: A couple of projected mini men try to repurpose a discarded helium ballon as a means to fly...

Escargot Escapades: Next to a wet patch of grass a few projected little people dressed in Ascot attire cheer on snails with numbers painted on their shells to engage in a race...

Big Buds Tiny Trimmers: A little projected farmer harvests buds off a physical (fake) cannabis plant accompanied by his farming wife stacking the buds...

Connoisseurs: A few mini men have stuck improvised mini taps into the bottom of a couple of discarded half empty Bristol Beer Factory cans in order enjoy their contents...

Tiny Touch-Up: A little projected boy improves on an existing bit of street art by doodling over it...

We would like to create 10 to 15 of these scenes in a variety of subject matters ranging from endearing to thought provoking to create a trail of tiny happenings.

Technical:

- The mini installations will need to sit against fairly smooth, light coloured walls since those walls would be our projection surfaces.

- The projector for each scene sits in some waterproof casing ca. 1m in front of the wall. We have previously used pico projectors hidden in some purpose made and decorated housing. We think it could be cost effective and in keep with the project aesthetics to hide the projectors in colourful wheely bins.

- We could also use bigger projectors provided and housed by SSS to hit 3 scenes in one location. It all depends on the sites we chose to use.
